Florida Tech Grad Is First Female Nominated for Four-star General

MELBOURNE, FLA.—A 33-year veteran of the U.S. military, Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody, has become the first woman to be nominated to the highest rank in the U.S. Army, four-star general.

In 1987 Lt. Gen. Dunwoody earned a master’s degree in logistics management from Florida Institute of Technology’s extended studies site in Fort Lee, Va.

"This is an historic occasion for the Department of Defense and I am proud to nominate Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody for a fourth star," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a statement. Dunwoody's nomination is awaiting approval by the U.S. Senate. She would take over as commander of Army Materiel Command (AMC), a branch of the army that provides logistics support to tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers stationed around the world.

Dunwoody was named deputy commanding general of Materiel Command earlier in June, following the retirement of Lt. Gen. William Mortensen.

“We are extremely pleased and proud that this first-time honor is going to one of our alumni,” said Clifford Bragdon, Florida Tech dean of University College.

There are about 10 four-star generals in the army in a total force of 1,077,500 soldiers, according to Army spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Anne Edgecomb. About 16 percent of U.S. soldiers and about five percent of U.S. Army generals are women, according to army statistics.

Adjunct Professor Earns Teaching Excellence Award

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Russell Jacques, Florida Institute of Technology adjunct professor, was selected as the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Member by the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) south region. Currently teaching accounting and finance for the university, he has taught at Florida Tech since 1986.

One who nominated Jacques said, “He is one of the only instructors we have seen who can help students see the real need for accounting in their careers and create a genuine interest in the topic. His teaching techniques—group discussion, streaming video, real world examples and testing— create a comprehensive course that builds a solid foundation in financial accounting.”

In his acceptance speech, Jacques said, “In my 10 or so years of teaching online, I’ve seen quite a bit of change from a technological point of view. It is all very exciting but we’ve only begun to exploit the power of this method of delivering education. . . With the advent of the Internet as a course delivery approach, we no longer require the student to come to the institution. . . We are making the dream of a higher education a reality for many more students.”

The ACHE recognizes excellence in teaching by modeling effective teaching behaviors, demonstrating techniques to motivate students and exhibiting a caring attitude toward students.

This award is presented annually by each of the organization’s eight United States regions. This is the second time that a Florida Tech faculty member has been recognized for this award. Previously, Donald Dement, who continues to teach for the university, was recognized.

U.S. News Ranks Florida Tech One of Nation’s Elite

MELBOURNE, FLA.—For the eighteenth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Florida Institute of Technology among the nation’s best national doctoral universities. The magazine’s special 2008 “America’s Best Colleges” issue was just published in August.
The 49-year-old Melbourne, Fla.-based university is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral Research Intensive University. This differentiates it from institutions that only offer degrees at the bachelor’s or master’s level.

The report lists several areas of growth over last year and for several years. In some categories, Florida Tech is shining brighter than it has in the past decade.

A measure of a university’s value is how successful it is in retaining its students through graduation. The university’s graduation rate of 57 percent is the highest ever and up 9 percent over last year.

Focusing on “high tech with a human touch,” Florida Tech embraces a goal of small class size for more personal attention. So, it is good news that the percentage of classes of less than 20 students shows improvement at 57 percent, a small but significant increase over last year. The number of classes with more than 50 students is 3 percent, as it was in 2005, the lowest of the decade.

Additionally, the number of new freshmen who were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes is at 34 percent—the best ever—and an indication that the university attracts top scholars.

And, good news for the Golden Anniversary Campaign for Florida Tech, the alumni giving rate is at an all-time high of 16 percent. This doubles the giving rate since just 2004.

Florida Tech President Anthony James Catanese said the university will continue to emphasize these strengths.

"It is our goal to always attract the best and brightest students to Florida Tech, and give them an academic environment where they can achieve and succeed," said Catanese. “As we build a university noted for both high technology and the human touch, we will continue to emphasize teaching, research and service in all that we do.” The U.S. News rankings system is based on quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality.

The premise of this book is that one no longer needs to predict the direction of future price movement to make money. “An important point to note,” writes Edward D. Dobson, president of Traders Press, “is that the authors of this book ‘walk the walk’. . . it is not written by academic theorists, but by actual practitioners of the principles of which they write.”

Zieg wrote the 216-page soft cover book with Heinrich A. Weber, securities consultant, and partner and risk manager of the firm DeTraCo. Weber resides in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Florida Institute of Technology’s NCR campus conducts numerous evening graduate-level and graduate certificate programs in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Based in Alexandria, branches also offer classes at the Quantico Marine Corps Base and Fort Detrick, Md.

First Three to Graduate from Online Partnership

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology announces that three students are the first graduates of the Master of Science in Systems Management (concentration in information systems) online degree program. The M.S. program, which began in 2004, is a partnership between Florida Tech and University Alliance, a leader in online education.
The graduates are Michael Bower of Pensacola, Fla.; Gregory Navarro of Mesa, Ariz., and Ernest Barclay of Norcross Ga.
Bower is a software developer who aspires to become a Marine Corps officer. He believes that his new degree will distinguish him.
“I was unaware of the fierce competition and needed something to make my application stand out. I felt that completing a graduate degree would do just that,” he said.
Seeking an educational alternative that was not full-time, Bower added, “I probably wouldn’t have finished graduate school this early in life had it not been for the online format. Reputation was my main draw to Florida Tech. I’ve known about Florida Tech since I was in high school and wanted to attend even then.”
Because the Web-based education is available 24/7, students can obtain their degree anytime, anywhere, with no campus attendance required. The program utilizes convenient online, interactive tools including streaming video lectures, an asynchronous bulletin board. Virtual office hours allow students real-time collaboration with faculty as well as networking with fellow students across the country and throughout the world.
The MS/SM program is designed to help both technical information systems (IS) professionals and professionals from other fields gain expertise in the management of information systems.
Headquartered in Tampa, Fla., University Alliance has more than 300,000 enrollments. The company provides degrees and certificate programs through exclusive long-term alliances with leading accredited universities, such as Florida Tech. Others include University of Notre Dame, Villanova University, Tulane University, Saint Leo University, Regis University, Jacksonville University, the University of South Florida and Nova Southeastern University.

Florida Tech Announces Maritime Security Courses through Industrial Partnership

- Florida Tech recently held its first courses in maritime security through its alliance with Maritime Protective Services/Asset Tracking Logistics and Security (MPS/ATLAS). Eight courses, given last fall and winter at an MPS/ATLAS secure facility in Deerfield Beach, Fla., and four classes taught in London, England, resulted in the certification of nearly 50 maritime professionals.

They completed 28 hours of instruction for Facility, Company and Vessel Security Officer certification. The course is authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Dept. of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD).

Florida Tech and MPS/ATLAS signed a memorandum of understanding late last summer to offer maritime, security and intermodal transportation training and courses. The partnership will explore opportunities in education, as well as research and development, and technology.

Plans call for the MPS/ATLAS Deerfield Beach facility to be designated a Florida Tech off-campus site. Facility offerings are intended to include professional development and training, and degree and certification-based programs.

MPS is a recognized leader in maritime, intermodal and transportation security. The company responds to the diverse needs of an international client group that includes prominent seaports, shipping companies, shipping lines, petrochemical and other industry leaders as well as governments and government regulatory agencies.

Florida Tech’s University College encompasses Florida Tech Consulting, Applied Research, Extended Studies, Center for Professional Development, Center for Distance Learning and 11 graduate centers, located in the Northeast, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. University College’s Dean Clifford R. Bragdon is executive director of the 12-university-consortium Center for Intermodal Transportation Safety and Security. He holds a patent for inventing the Intermodal Transportation Simulation System.

Distinguished Visiting Research Professors Join Florida Tech

- Florida Tech Provost T. Dwayne McCay announces the appointment of two researchers to the position of Distinguished Visiting Research Professor in Florida Tech’s University College. Keith Berkowitz, M.D., and Peter V. Radatti, Ph.D., join the faculty to pursue research in sustainable food products related to the State of Florida.

Berkowitz is medical director of the Center for Balanced Health in New York City, which he founded in 2003. The center specializes in the prevention and treatment of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic conditions. Formerly, he was with the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine and worked with Dr. Robert Atkins as business and medical director.

Radatti, whose background is in chemistry, electronics and astrophysics, worked for 13 years at General Electric Space, Military Programs Department. While there, he designed and developed very early fiber optics computer networks. In 1998, he started his own computer security company, CyberSoft, Inc., which sells security products primarily to the U.S. Defense Department.

Radatti is CEO and, with Berkowitz, co-founder of R&B Foods. They began the company in 2004 to create healthy food products that would be beneficial to Berkowitz’s patients, many of whom have diabetes, unstable blood sugar or heart disease. At Florida Tech they will continue work they have begun on orange-based fiber flour and other food products.

Both will report to the dean of University College, Clifford R. Bragdon, Ph.D.

Catanese drew the names of two winners of 27-inch color TV sets and of 10 faculty and staff who earned a one-day United Way holiday, or day off.

Dr. A.T. "Tim" Hollingsworth, director of professional development, University College, and Dr. Catanese were the Florida Tech 2005 United Way campaign co-chairs.
